The Premier League, since its founding in the 1992-1993 season, has risen to be the best of the top-flight leagues in Europe and the world. It has since become a destination and goal for professional players and fans alike to witness the atmosphere live.
With 20 clubs playing each other every season and thousands upon thousands of matches played there are bound to be so many memorable moments in its history. But here are EXO Tickets’ top 10 unforgettable moments in Premier League history.
10. Eric Cantona’s Kung-Fu Kick
Starting off the list with one of the most controversial kicks — and this one was off the pitch. Eric Cantona was one of the Premier League’s most notorious bad boy and Manchester United's fiercest attacking forwards.
Cantona was red-carded after pulling Richard Shaw’s shirt in United’s match against Crystal Palace in Selhurst Park in January 1995. Walking off, the hot-headed Cantona received abuse from a Palace fan and saw red. In his greatest impersonation of a kung-fu artist, Cantona sent a flying kick to the fan that would make even Bruce Lee proud.
It remains one of the league’s greatest controversies and Cantona was handed a 9-month ban by the FA, stripped of his France national team captaincy, ordered to do 120 hours of community service, and was fined £20,000 for his antics. Talk about unforgettable.
9. “I’d love it if we beat them”
Our next entry comes in the following season in the form of a managerial rivalry story. Sir Alex Ferguson is rightfully a legend in Premier League history with his 13 division titles, however, one of his most iconic wins was when he played mind games against rival manager Kevin Keegan of Newcastle United.
Trailing the Magpies 12 points who were top of the table, the Red Devils legend tactician accused other teams of not giving much effort into beating the league leaders, something that made Keegan tick. The ensuing mind games resulted in one of the most memorable rants in Premier League history.
“I've kept really quiet, but I'll tell you something, he went down in my estimation when he said that. We have not resorted to that, but I'll tell you, you can tell him now if you're watching it, we're still fighting for this title, and he's got to go to Middlesbrough and get something, and... and... I'll tell you, honestly, I will love it if we beat them, love it!”
The tricks worked as the Toons fumbled their lead, and lost the trophy to United who won the league by four points.
8. The Special One Has Arrived
The year was 2004 and Jose Mourinho had just led FC Porto to an unprecedented UEFA Champions League triumph (its only one since the tournament’s rebranding).
Chelsea’s new owner, Roman Abramovich, quickly brought the Portuguese tactician to English shores and made him the new manager of the Blues. What ensued was one of the most glorious eras for Chelsea and English media, with Mourinho bringing his brand of snarky and confident attitude to every interview.
However, the most memorable was his first press conference as he arrived in England, letting everyone know that a new manager was in charge, and subsequently coining his new nickname.
“Please don’t call me arrogant, because what I’m saying is true. I’m [the] European champion and I think I am a special one.”
Mourinho was able to deliver the club’s first-ever Premier League title and two more afterwards. He also won an FA Cup, an FA Community Shield, and two League Cups.
7. Steven Gerrard's Slip of the Ages
In one of the most heart-wrenching events for Liverpool fans, the 2014 season race was lost by a fateful slip by their captain that would cost them a chance to win their first Premier League title in club history.
Led by Brendan Rodgers, they had three games left and had five points ahead of second-place Manchester City. The Reds were the favourites to lift the title.
In one of their last games, they faced Chelsea in a must-win home game. Disaster struck at the last minute of the first half when Steven Gerrard slipped and let Demba Ba mount an undefended counterattack, putting the Reds at a 1-0 deficit.
The error eventually collapsed the team who lost 2-0 against Chelsea, and carried over their bad luck in their next game. Manchester City was victorious, winning the title over Liverpool by two points.
In a sad swan song, Gerrard would have ended his career with at least one Premier League trophy if not for the fateful slip.
6. Nobody does it like Beckham - The Halfway Kick
Before becoming the Inter Miami FC boss, everyone knew David Beckham as a young flashy boy who would eventually become one of England's greatest legends and Manchester United’s greatest players.
Part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s legendary “Class of 92” Gary Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, and Beckham were the Red Devil’s future. In the 1996-1997 season, Beckham was hitting his stride as Old Trafford’s youngest star. “Bend it like Beckham” fans would say.
The young Becks' greatest highlight in the Premier League came when at just the age of 21, he scored one of the greatest screamers of all time against Wimbledon FC.
Beckham saw opposing goalkeeper Neil Sullivan was off his line. From the halfway line, the youngster sent the ball flying towards the net with Sullivan desperately trying to reach it in vain. The goal has been replicated throughout the years, but nobody did it like a young David Beckham.
We’ve finished halfway through the list and fifth place is another memorable moment in league history.
5. Aguerooooooooo!
At the number five spot is another screamer courtesy of Sergio Arguero’s iconic goal to win Manchester City’s first-ever title.
The Argentinian scored Man City’s title-winning goal against Queens Park Rangers in 2012. With both sides leveled 2-2, the striker sent out a strike in the 93rd minute to deliver them the title.
Martin Tyler’s ensuing iconic commentary has now lived in ‘Citizens’ fans forever as he screamed; “Agueroooooooo” as Kun-Aguero scored the winner.
4. SIUUUUUUUUU!
Touted as the Premier League’s most influential star and one of Manchester United’s greatest pickups, Cristiano Ronaldo made his mark on the English shores.
A prodigy of Sir Alex Ferguson, the Portuguese brought new heights to the Red Devils that culminated in a Ballon d’Or in 2008 (only one of three won by a Premier League player in the 21st century) and a Puskas Award in 2009.
Of course, who can forget that knuckleball against Porto in 2009?
3. Wayne Rooney’s Superb Bicycle Kick vs Man City
As a testament to Manchester United’s dominance, another entry comes from Old Trafford.
Wayne Rooney is considered Manchester United’s greatest player, and he is the club’s top scorer with 253. Of this, fans consider his bicycle kick against cross-town rival Manchester City as his most iconic.
The Wonder Boy, Wazza, Roo, as he was known to fans didn’t have the most ideal start to the game in that match. He was constantly hounded by defenders but found the perfect moment at the end of the game — proving indeed that class is permanent.
In the dying seconds of the game, Paul Scholes sent a quick pass to Nani who crossed it Rooney inside the box. The legendary forward launched into the air and sent the ball flying past the City keeper as the final whistle blew. Fans erupted and Rooney performed one of the most iconic celebrations ever.
2. Leicester City’s Cinderella Story
The Premier League is usually considered a tournament of big clubs, but Leicester City defied all odds by lifting the trophy in 2016 in one of the most iconic “underdog stories” of all time.
The King Power Stadium-based squad managed to survive relegation the previous season. With poor performances, Nigel Pearson was sacked and replaced by Claudio Ranieri.
With the Italian at the helm, he complemented Jamie Vardy and Riyad Marhez with summer signings N’Golo Kante, Robert Huth, and Shinji Okazaki. The team went on to only lose three games with the odds stacked against them.
With a 5000-1 chance to win the league, the impossible was achieved not through a glorious battle, but through the second place Tottenham Hotspur’s misgivings. It was their loss to Chelsea that ultimately gave Leicester City the title.
In a league full of giants like Liverpool, Man United, City, and Arsenal, the achievement of the Foxes was a testament that anything was possible.
1. Arsenal Are Invincible
What better way to end the list than by going to the most perfect team in Premier League history — the 2003-2004 Arsenal otherwise known as the “Invincibles”?
Legendary Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger and the Gunners achieved the herculean feat by going undefeated in their whole campaign. The gladiators who helped the victory were Thierry Henry, Robert Pires, Dennis Bergkamp, Captain Patrick Vieira, Ashley Cole, and many more.
Sir Alex Ferguson, the fierce rival of the French Wenger even exclaimed that the undefeated feat trumps all of his major achievements. That’s why we believe this is the top unforgettable Premier League moment.
